Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions

Why are my macros different from the numbers on the recipe site?

Recipe sites typically use rough estimates, manufacturer labels, or nutrition databases that can vary widely in quality. MacroScan uses USDA FoodData Central — the gold standard nutrition database used by the FDA, registered dietitians, and most serious tracking apps (MyFitnessPal, Cronometer, etc.).

Our numbers are more consistent and scientifically grounded, which is why they sometimes differ from what a recipe site shows. If a recipe site says a serving has 350 calories and we show 390, trust the USDA data.

How does the Fit Score work?

The Fit Score compares one serving's macros against your daily target divided by your meals-per-day setting. For example, if your protein goal is 150g/day and you eat 3 meals, the per-meal target is 50g. A recipe serving with 45g+ protein scores green. 30-45g scores yellow. Under 30g scores red. Calories, carbs, and fat are factored in proportionally. Set your targets in the extension popup under the Targets tab.

How do I set my macro targets?

Click the MacroScan icon in your Chrome toolbar to open the popup. The first tab (“Targets”) lets you enter your daily goals for calories, protein, carbs, fat, and meals per day.

Not sure what targets to set? Use the Calculator tab — enter your body weight, goal (cut/maintain/bulk), and activity level, and we'll calculate personalized targets you can apply with one click.

The overlay isn't showing up on a recipe page.

A few things to check in order:

  • Make sure the extension is enabled at chrome://extensions
  • Reload the page — the extension runs on page load, not after navigation
  • Check you're on a supported site (see the list above)
  • Check your daily limit — free accounts are capped at 5 analyses/day. The count resets at midnight.
  • Some recipe pages load content dynamically. Try scrolling down to trigger the recipe content before the overlay appears.

If none of these fix it, email us with the URL and we'll investigate.

My license key isn't activating.

Enter the key exactly as it appears in your purchase email, including all dashes (format: MS-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX). Keys are case-insensitive. If the key was purchased recently, wait a few minutes as it may take a moment to activate in our system. Still not working? Use the contact form above with your order confirmation number and we'll sort it manually within a few hours.

How do I cancel my subscription?

Your purchase confirmation email contains a link to the Stripe billing portal where you can cancel self-service. If you can't find the email, email us at support@macroscanapp.com and we'll send you the direct link. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period and your Pro access continues until then.

Can I get a refund?

Email us within 7 days of your charge. We'll process refunds for legitimate cases — if the extension didn't work for you, we don't want to keep your money. Just tell us what went wrong.
